Privacy policy
Salt & Honey is a recipe and pantry app for iPhone, iPad and Android, made by Willow and The Wren, LLC. This policy says what the apps do with your information.
The short version
Salt & Honey has no account, no sign-up, no ads and no server of its own. Your recipes, pantry, plans, notes and photos stay on your device. We do not sell, rent or share your information, and we do not track you.
What stays on your device
Everything you put into Salt & Honey: recipes, pantry items, shopping lists, meal plans, dinner parties, ratings, notes and photos. It is stored on your device. On iPhone and iPad it can also sync through your own iCloud account, handled by Apple under Apple's privacy policy; we cannot see it.
What leaves your device, and when
Salt & Honey sends data off your device only in these cases:
- A recipe link you import. When you paste or share a link, the app downloads that web page, as a browser would. If the page names a photo for its recipe, the app downloads that photo too, so you can see it before you save. The photo can come from another server the website uses, such as an image service. Each website sees an ordinary request.
- A barcode you scan. When you scan a grocery barcode, the app sends only the barcode's digits to two public product databases, Open Food Facts and UPCitemdb, to find the product's name. No photo and nothing about you is sent.
- Android only: Google's ML Kit. The Android app reads text from photos and PDFs, and reads barcodes, with Google's ML Kit, which runs on your phone. ML Kit sends Google technical diagnostics: the device model, Android version, app version, an ID for this installation, and performance and error data. It does not send your photos, the text read from them, or your recipes. See Google's ML Kit data disclosure page for details.
- Android only: Gemini Nano, if you turn it on. Drink suggestions from Gemini Nano run on your phone; the recipe never leaves it. Android downloads the model from Google once, if you choose to. ML Kit's GenAI diagnostics then apply as in point 3.
- Things you send yourself. A recipe card, a shopping list, a backup file or a calendar event goes only where you send or save it.
On iPhone and iPad, reading text and barcodes (Apple's Vision) and drink suggestions from Apple Intelligence run on the device and send nothing.
This website
saltandhoney.app uses no cookies, no analytics and no files from other websites. Cloudflare hosts the site. Like every web host, it sees the address of each page it sends and the IP address of the device that asks for it. A recipe card link keeps the recipe after the # sign, and a browser never sends that part to any server, so neither we nor Cloudflare ever see the recipe.
Permissions
The apps ask for access only when you use a feature that needs it: the camera to scan a barcode or photograph a recipe; notifications for Cook Mode timers and restock reminders; exact alarms (Android) so a timer rings on time; the calendar to add your meal plan to it; and on iPhone, Reminders to send a shopping list there. You can turn any of these off in your device's settings.
Children
Salt & Honey is not made for children under 13. It suggests wine and beer to go with dishes.
Deleting your data
Delete a recipe or item in the app, or delete the app, and its data on that device is gone. On iPhone and iPad, iCloud data is removed through your iCloud settings. We hold no copy.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new date.
